On average, we spend a third of our lives in bed. So when it comes to choosing a bed, it’s vital to give it some thought. Here’s a guide to help you shop for and select the perfect mattress.

Read & Research
To choose a mattress that best suits your needs, do a little homework to understand what makes a good mattress.

1. Degree of support
Good sleep depends on a mattress that provides appropriate support for your entire body, ensuring that all muscles are completely relaxed and your spine is properly aligned regardless of your sleeping positions.

2. Latex quality
Not all latex are the same quality. There is a big difference between good quality latex and ordinary latex:

3. Spring mattresses
Spring construction, the padding, the quality of the quilt cover, the thickness of the wire, the number of coils, the height of each coil and the way the coils are linked all contribute to the quality of a spring mattress. Generally, the higher the coil count, the firmer the support. Pocketed springs also minimise the transmission of one partner’s movement to another.

4. Advanced technologies
State-of-the-art technologies are often harnessed to develop luxurious mattresses.
For example, Dunlopillo-Gel cushioning technology, used in hospitals for critical care patients, provides fundamental support for pressure relief, spinal alignment and back support. OUTLAST® technology, originally developed for NASA for use in space and very high altitudes, continuously adapts to and balances temperature swings for more comfortable sleep. Silpure, developed by Thomson Research Associates, applies the anti-bacterial properties of silver to textiles, keeping mattresses cleaner, fresher and free of unpleasant odours for healthier sleep.

Consider & Decide
Before you hit the shops, spend some time to consider the following:

- Mattress size
King, queen or single? If you’re sleeping with your partner, don't choose a mattress smaller than a queen size to avoid being disturbed by your partner's tossing and turning. Take into consideration your height, weight and build. As a rule of thumb, your mattress should be 10 to 15 cm longer than the taller partner. If you’re over 1.8m tall, consider a mattress that’s longer than the standard. And the heavier you weigh, the firmer the mattress you’ll need.

- Comfort level
Do you prefer firm support or plush comfort? If you suffer from a bad back, it’s best to ask your chiropractor for recommendations.

- Price range
Mattresses can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars. Think of your mattress as an investment that will last you at least 10 years. A cheaper mattress may not last as long as a more expensive one. So always buy the best that you can afford.

Shop together
Comfort is very subjective. While some like the feel of plush comfort, others like the support of firm mattresses. If you’re shopping for a mattress for two, take your partner along with you. You’ll want to choose a mattress that both of you find comfortable.

Test & Try
Don't be embarrassed to take your time to try out a selection of mattresses. And don't merely sit on the edge or lie on your back for a few seconds. Wear comfortable clothing, remove your coat and shoes, and lie down for a few minutes in different sleeping positions. Spend some time on various mattresses to find out which one suits you the best.

Ask questions
Before you make your choice, don't be shy to ask the sales person questions, like:
- What is the mattress padding made of?
- Which type of spring system is used?
- Are the coils pre-compressed for greater durability?
- Are the coils hermetically sealed and protected from rust?
- Are the coils individually pocketed to ensure your partner is not disturbed?
- Does your mattress offer different degrees of firmness in the same mattress to maximise the support and comfort of your body?

If you're considering a latex mattress, ask:
- Is the latex hypo-allergenic?
- Does it possess anti-microbial properties — anti-bacteria, anti-dust mites
and anti-fungus?
- Does the latex have interconnecting air cells allowing thorough ventilation, so that your mattress stays cool?
- Is the latex thoroughly washed — no smell and kind to your skin?
- Is the latex the more durable open cell system?
- Does a latex mattress offer different levels of firmness and support?
